Health Science Technology

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Health Science Technology is a health career based program providing lecture, laboratory, and hands-on experiences. Classes include Medical Procedures, Medical Terminology, Human Behavior and Disorders, and Medical Professions. Proficiency in reading, spelling and logical thinking are qualifications for students.  Participation in HOSA, the student organization is encouraged.

Health Science Technology introduces students to health care careers through guest speakers who work in jobs as nurses, EMT’s, paramedics, dental assistants, radiologists, etc. Second year Health Science Technology students who demonstrate positive attitudes, good academic performance, and good behavior will have the opportunity to job shadow medical professionals during scheduled class time.

Students are encouraged to continue their education and training in post secondary schools and colleges. A successful two-year student will have the necessary skills to gain entry-level employment in the field of health care. 

Certification in CPR is offered through the American Heart Association.  Students can receive training as a Nursing Assistant through Arkansas State University-Newport and receive concurrent credit upon successful completion they are eligible to take a state exam and receive their C.N.A. license.

Grades: 10, 11, 12  
Credit: 1 year equals 2-3 credits
